Digital Energy Asia Summit 2023: Driving Progress in the Energy Sector


The Digital Energy Asia Summit 2023 was held on June 7-8 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This prestigious event brought together over 110 industry experts, government officials, academics, and technology leaders to discuss the latest developments and future directions in digital energy.


The summit provided an outstanding platform for participants to exchange ideas, showcase innovations, and foster collaborations to advance the digital energy landscape. The theme "Digitalizing Energy Transition and Sustainability: Protecting the Core, Exploring the Growth" reflected the pressing need to balance traditional energy sources with emerging digital technologies for a sustainable future.





The event kicked off with a warm welcome from the Summit Chairman, Sharul A-Rashid, Head of Technical Excellence at PETRONAS. This was followed by an insightful keynote address by PETRONAS Senior Vice President Datuk HJ. Bacho Pilong, who highlighted the tremendous progress made in remote operations, data utilization, and alternative energy but emphasized more work is needed to address climate change.


Over the two days, attendees gained valuable perspectives through plenary roundtables, paper presentations, and panel discussions on pertinent topics like future-proofing the workforce, cybersecurity, asset management, automation, and decarbonization.





Notable speakers included industry leaders from PETRONAS, Siemens, Schneider Electric, ExxonMobil, DNV, and more. They shared real-world experiences and cutting-edge use cases in leveraging data analytics, digital twins, machine learning, 5G, and other emerging technologies to drive efficiency, resiliency, and sustainability across the energy value chain.



In addition, a Postgraduate Industry-Based Research Competition allowed students to showcase innovative projects and get expert feedback on bringing ideas to reality. This initiative to bridge industry-academia gaps received strong support from the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia, UTM, IEEE, and other institutions.




The Digital Energy Asia Summit 2023 concluded on a high note, with participants energized by new connections and ideas to push digital transformation in energy enterprises. As the industry navigates an unprecedented convergence of technology disruptions and decarbonization imperatives, gatherings like this will be crucial to chart the path forward.
