H2Asia 2023 Sparks Momentum for Hydrogen Adoption in Asia

The inaugural H2Asia 2023 conference concluded on a high note after two days of vibrant discussions and exchange of ideas focused on propelling the hydrogen industry forward. Held from August 29-30 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the event brought together over 110 stakeholders spanning industry, government, and academia.

With the theme “Fuelling our Future with H2 and CCUS”, the conference highlighted two pivotal pathways for low carbon hydrogen - green hydrogen via electrolysis and blue hydrogen utilising carbon capture. Sessions throughout the event delved into the latest developments and real-world case studies around large-scale deployment, regulations, safety, cost optimisation, and more.

Energy and Environmental Sustainability Deputy Minister Dr Hazland Abang Hipni was invited as a guest of honour and CCUS panellist. Notable speakers included PETRONAS SVP Datuk Bacho Pilong, Norway Ambassador to Malaysia H.E. Morten Paulsen, Black & Veatch APAC Solutions Coordinator Dr. Onvaree Techakesari, and leading companies like Siemens, Hyundai, Total Energies, NEL, and more. Their insights illuminated tangible projections, challenges, and opportunities across the hydrogen value chain.

In addition, the event featured high-level panel discussions on regional viability, regulations, CCUS development, and technology R&D priorities. Attendees gained an in-depth perspective on enabling environments, project financing, hydrogen applications, and keys to bringing down costs.

A highlight was the showcase of real-world deployments in Malaysia and globally. Case studies ran the gamut from hydrogen refueling stations to leveraging hydrogen for rural electrification, Net Zero strategies, and more. These provided valuable glimpses into projects pioneering adoption and contributing to mainstream acceptance.

H2Asia 2023 forged new connections between policymakers, end-users, and solution providers to align on priorities. The event planted seeds for potential pilot projects, partnerships, and pathways to scale up hydrogen across Asia. As the hydrogen economy gains momentum worldwide, gatherings like this will be instrumental in nurturing ecosystems, capabilities, and collaboration.
