Reimagining Industrial Process Control Systems: Insights from DEAS2024 Workshop

On April 30, 2024, industry professionals and technology enthusiasts gathered at the Corus Hotel in Kuala Lumpur for the highly anticipated workshop on Open Process Automation (OPA). This event, part of the Digital Energy Asia Summit (DEAS2024), highlighted the transformative potential of OPA in industrial control systems, showcasing innovative approaches to evolving from closed, proprietary systems to open, secure, and standards-based solutions.

Workshop Highlights

The workshop kicked off with registration at 2:00 PM, followed by an engaging series of presentations and discussions. The introductory sessions on OPA were delivered by prominent figures in the industry. Dave Emerson, Vice President at Yokogawa U.S. Technology Center, and Aneil Ali, Forum Director at Open Process Automation™ Forum, The Open Group, set the stage by reimagining the future of industrial control systems.

Continuing the discussion, Paul Hunker, Consult and Technical Director at DS Interoperability, and Pal Roach, Sr. Principal Industry Consultant at Rockwell Automation, delved deeper into the technical aspects of OPA, highlighting its benefits and potential applications.

Avinash Rajah, Industry Solutions Director at Intel’s Global Industry Vertical Solutions Group, provided an insightful perspective on the convergence of Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT), emphasizing how OPA facilitates this integration.

After a networking break, Ryan Smeltzer from ExxonMobil shared his experience leading the Open Process Automation Program, discussing the transition from test-bed projects to lighthouse projects, illustrating real-world applications of OPA.

Ng Wei Jie, Head of Sales at Schneider Electric, presented the NextGen Realtime Engine 61499, showcasing cutting-edge advancements in real-time processing and control systems.

En. Sharul A-Rashid, Head of Technical Excellence at PETRONAS and President of ISA Malaysia, shared PETRONAS’s journey from conceptual design to test-bed implementation, offering valuable insights into the practical challenges and successes of adopting OPA.

Ir. Dr. Idris Ismail, Associate Professor at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, discussed the integration of test-bed projects into university curriculums, highlighting the importance of academic-industry collaboration in fostering innovation and preparing future talent.

The workshop concluded with a Q&A session, allowing attendees to engage with the speakers and deepen their understanding of OPA.
